It’s a well known fact that the recruitment process can be extremely inefficient, so it’s no wonder that many companies are turning to social platforms and exploring new methods to source candidates. On average it takes 45 days to hire someone; this equates to a lot of time and money wasted, something all businesses want to avoid in the current gloomy economy.
So it’s no wonder that recruiters are looking to new ways to shorten the hiring process and some are taking advantage of the internet and the tools it offers, such as interviewing via a web conference to provide solutions to this difficult problem.
Using the web to your advantage.
For employers, using the web to short list candidates makes the hiring process easier than ever before. Researching potential candidates’ social listings on personal blogs, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn can give employers a really great insight into the candidate and how they present themselves.
If they have a less than flattering (in the employers opinion) online persona then the likelihood is that they will not fit with the company’s ethos. Vice versa, if an employer likes what they see, it can be a good icebreaker.
Conversely, candidates need to be careful with what they put on social platforms when actively looking for a job. Do a Google search to see what comes up and change profiles which are less than favorable.
Is an interview online as effective as a traditional meeting?
An introduction using web conferencing can provide a real alternative when a face to face interview just isn’t possible. Developments in high definition hardware make it easier to hear and see the other person, their body language and their professionalism.
Although this method can be a new process for many employers, the fundamentals are essentially the same; poor body language and careless presentation will ruin a video interview as easily as a one-to-one conversation.
Location, location, location.
Thanks to the World Wide Web, employers are no longer limited to hiring people within their locale; they can pre-interview potential candidates from all over the world to fulfil their job requirements. By interviewing via a web conference, it allows candidates anywhere in the world with an internet connection to be seen without the need to travel long distances and incurring the inevitable expense.
Doing more online research using search engines and social networks can vastly improve the quality of candidates an employer then chooses to interview. Furthermore, using technology such as a web conference to set up initial meetings offer significant time and cost savings, as well as being able to see people from anywhere, meaning that positions can be filled quickly and ensuring you get the right person for the job.
